Math as a Human Endeavour
How:
Take time every day to explore the math around you. Explore nature to find different patterns and shapes. Count items when you make a grocery list, follow a recipe, look at clocks to see how much time is left, compare objects in nature, or build something and measure how its height. So many everyday activities involve math:
Baking: discuss measurement, fractions, temperature, time
Building with lego, blocks, puzzles: patterns, balance, counting, measuring,
Nature Walks: patterns, shapes/geometry, symmetry, counting
Why:
Mathematics as a Human Endeavor involves students who see value in learning mathematics and see mathematics in the world around them. It is a way of both seeing and communicating about their world and their needs.
